PlaceMakers (Ireland) is an organisation with a vision to improve the quality and experience of the built environment, particularly the public realm. PlaceMakers specialises in urban design, sustainable transport planning and collaborative placemaking.
The built environment refers to the components, such as streets, parks, houses and shops, that make up our urban areas including cities, towns, villages and suburbs. The public realm refers to the areas of our built environment that are generally freely and publicly accessible including town squares, parks, and streets.
What is better Placemaking and Urban Design about?
Ireland has experienced an unprecedented period of urban development, particularly over the last 15 years. Much of this development has failed to meet the needs of people and the environment. For example, many people now live in poorly serviced, poorly designed and unattractive developments where car dependency and social isolation is high, and public transport is not viable. Even the most basic mode of transport - walking - is very unappealing in many suburban locations with streets that do not connect and neighbourhoods are segregated by hostile fenced-off roads. There is an alternative to this. We have lost our way over the last few decades, but before this, we knew how to design cities and towns that were both beautiful and functional. This is what is known as placemaking or good urban design.
Urban Design is the collaborative and interdisciplinary process of shaping the setting for life in cities, towns, neighbourhoods and villages. It is the ‘art of making places’ and provides a bridge or common ground between the construction and development professionals. PlaceMakers aims to up-skills professionals with the lost art of making attractive, sustainable and practical places to live, work, play and visit.
Education & Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
PlaceMakers provides professionals, developers and individuals involved in the design and management of our urban places and spaces the tools, knowledge and skills to make sound urban design decisions with confidence. PlaceMakers provides bespoke hands-on training courses for both public and private sector clients in all aspects of urban design. Click here for more information.
Research & Case Studies
In order to improve our built environment, we need to study the successes and failures of our cities, towns, villages and suburbs. PlaceMakers undertakes research and case studies in various topics and issues of interest in the urban environment. These are freely accessible and downloadable here.
Design & Design Review
PlaceMakers provides a design review service for the public and private sector. PlaceMakers can provide confidential and independent urban design advice or design review on planning applications or design proposals.
PlaceMakers offers urban design advice and consultancy services in relation to masterplanning, public realm design, transport planning, urban regeneration, urban framework & local area planning. Urban Design is an interdisciplinary process and PlaceMakers works in close collaboration with architects, planners, engineers, landscape architects and developers.
